BLOG TOUR: Dead Living by Glenn Bullion

Dead Living by Glenn Bullion
Publication date: January 7th 2013
by Permuted Press
Genre: Horror/Zombies

Synopsis:
It didn’t take long for the world to die. And it didn’t take long, either, for the dead to rise.

Born on the day everything ended, a world filled with the walking dead is the only one that Aaron knows. Kept in seclusion, his family teaches  him the basics. How to read and write. How to survive.

Then Aaron makes a shocking discovery. The undead, who desire nothing but flesh, ignore him. It’s as if he’s invisible to them.

The survivors of the old suburb of Lexington call a high school their home. They live day to day, without any of the luxuries mankind used to enjoy. Samantha is a product of the new world. Alone, cold, looking out only for herself. She and the other residents of Lexington feel their hope dwindling. They need change. They need someone who can face the corpses. They need someone who can live in a city of the dead.

They need Aaron.

A_TiffyFit's Review: Zombies. Zombies. Zombies. The Zombie Apocalypse. Everyone jokes about how it's upon us, how it will soon happen. The news is full of people on bath salts cannibalizing someone they've attacked. But none of us think about the "What if this actually happens?" in a way that we can actually prepare for, do we?

DEAD LIVING starts off with a normal Saturday at work. Joe is grumbling about the overtime, but with a baby on the way, his soon-to-be-3-member family needs the extra cash. One of his truck drivers, Anthony, is complaining about how a homeless dude bit him, and he's not looking so hot. Going on break, everyone is gathered around the television set, watching in horror as the news reports more and more people dying, rising, and biting one another. Joe then gets a phone call that his wife has gone into labor and he rushes off for the hospital. So yes...this book starts off with action in leaps and bounds. Then it fast forwards in time and now it's been about 23 years since the outbreak, and there are little pockets of survivors. Aaron, Joe's son, is one of these survivors. And somehow...the dead ignore him as they clamor for more flesh, rejecting him, as if he's not even there.

What I loved about this book was that it DID fast forward in time. We didn't spend a lot of time watching the world quickly crumble. We got to see a little about how Joe and his son survived and then we meet Samantha living in Lexington and watch as she stumbles across Aaron. As expected, humanity is at its worst for the most part: killing one another over crumbs, killing one another over water, raping the helpless, enslaving one another. Even the little Lexington has its baddies (they disgust me). This was also one of the first, if not the only, zombie books I've read so far (not like I've read all the zombie books out there, I'm just saying that of the ones I've read so far...) that didn't have a heavy religious angle. I'm sure there are pockets of those people in this zombified earth, but thankfully Bullion doesn't mention them. (I'm tired of the religious bits.) This doesn't mean there aren't morals in this book. One of my favorite things about this book is watching Samantha go from the "what can you do for ME if I do this for you" kind of survivalist, selfish attitude to:

She replayed the scene with Nikki in her mind. Aaron hadn’t hesitated to help her. He never hesitated to help anyone. In a world full of walking corpses and bad people, even apathetic people like Sam, Aaron tried to be the best person he could be. She didn’t like how she was starting to feel.

Lots of action, a little romance, a female protagonist who can damn well take care of herself, even if she's so incredibly gruff at the start that you want to smack her, a sweet, strong male lead who is incredibly generous and looks out for others. If you're into zombies, don't miss this. Thrilling, action packed fiction that kept me glued to my kindle.

About the Author
I live in Maryland with my wonderful wife and four cats. I love gaming, computer technology, movies, and of course, reading and writing. I love science fiction and especially horror and the paranormal. Ghosts, vampires, werewolves, zombies, anything supernatural, all beautiful subjects.

I’ve been writing since I was twelve years old. There’s just something about creating a story that I like. I always try come up with something that hasn’t been done, or is unique in some way. It could be someone with demonic powers, or something much more simple, such as a person that zombies ignore. It’s fun to create a character, give him or her a personality and background, and watch them evolve through a story.

I’ve tried other subjects, but always drift back to horror and paranormal. There’s a reason why we keep going back to horror movies and books, why they’ve made fifty Friday the 13th movies. People like to be scared, but more than that, I think paranormal and horror stir the imagination like nothing else. We’re all just a little nervous to open that closet door at midnight, or look under the bed.
