TAUT: The Ford Book by JA Huss
(Rook and Ronin Spin-off)
Published January 20, 2014
Contemporary, Erotic Romance, New-ish Adult

Synopsis:
TAUT IS A STANDALONE NOVEL - you do NOT have to read any of the Rook and Ronin books first.

Ford Aston is known for many things. Being an emotionless, messed up bastard, a freakishly smart social outcast, and a cold, domineering master who keeps "pets" instead of girlfriends.

And after Rook broke his heart, he plans to keep it that way.

Ashleigh is known for nothing, and that's exactly what she's got going for her. She's broke, stranded in the mountains with a three month old baby, and Ford Aston is screwing with her head.

Big. Time.

And she plans to mess with his right back.

It's a coy game at first, filled with flirting, and innuendo--but Ford soon realizes something is not quite right with Ashleigh. In fact, something is seriously, seriously wrong and the closer they get to their final destination, the closer Ford gets to the truth.

One night of devastation, self-loathing, and emptiness turns into the best thing that ever happened to Ford Aston. But one day of in-your-face reality threatens Ashleigh's whole existence.

Since A LOT of people have been asking here is the scoop on how this book fits in with my Rook & Ronin series:

Ford first appears in Rook and Ronin #2, Manic. He has a bigger role in Panic, R&R #3, and then he has a novella, called SLACK. This TAUT book is only FORD. It's not really part of the R&R series, as that plot has all been sidelined for this one romance book.

Disclaimer I received my copy of TAUT as part of a blog tour, to read and review. The following is my honest opinion. No compensation was offered or accepted.

You know what? This is one of those reviews I’m going to have to write and re-write and edit out the curSing before I can publish it on amazon. Why? Because it’s that fricking good, okay? This is Fricking Ford Aston’s novel and it was that frakking good.

Who is Ford Aston, you ask? Dude. Where have you been? Did you not read Tragic, Manic, or Panic ? Wellthose were my introductions to JA Huss. I enjoyed the Rook & Ronin series very much (excePt for Claire. Don’t get me started on fricking Claire!), but you know wHat? It was the two “side” charactErs to those novels that piqued my inteREst more so than the main characters. Ford AstOn, first. Spencer Shrike, second. (Not to mention Ronnie’s brothers, the Vaughn boys *coughs*hints hopeFully to author*coughs*). What drew me to Ford? Honesty. He’s so Perfectly frakking blunt. He’s got no filter. He’s totally lacking that social skill set it seems, which made me go a little gooey. He’s awkwaRd, but confIdent and totally accepting of his awkwardness.

So, when I found out that he was starring in his own novella (SLACK) and then his own full noVel, TAUT, I squealed like the silly girl I am. And I know I’m not the only one who did so as there are quite a few Huss-ies out there who expressed the sAme sentiment!

Okay, so onto this novel. TAUT piCks up where the novella SLACK left offand really that’s at the end of PANIC. Ford can’t stand there and watch Rook, whom he’s fallen in love with, live out her happiness with Ronin, one of his closest friends. He may not particularly care for Ronin, but there’s an unbreakable bond between him, Spencer, & Ford, and Ford will NOT violate the brotherhood bY pursuing Rook. So, he’s leaving. This breaks Rook’s heart because, while she is in love totally and completely with Ronin, a part of her loves Ford, too. He is her Person. This was the part of the novel that I really couldn’t stand, actually. Rook pissed me off. She’s selfish and needy and, while he said it to hurt her and didn’t really mean it, like Ford says, she’s a Taker. So yeah! YOU GO, FORD. You leave that hot mess until you find the one that completes you!

"I want one who will keep up, challenge me, help me reach my full potential. And yes, I'd like to tie her up and slap her ass during sex, make her beg for me, have her submit herself fully -- let me own her in private."

I love that quote above. That’s what Ford wants. That’s what I want Ford to get. So, as he’s leaving Denver, heading to LA in his beat up Bronco, his car breaks down. He’s stuck in Vail at a little hotel run by his old librarian, Mrs. Pearson. There, he encounters Ashleigh Li, stranded in her broken down car with her baby, Katelynn. Slightly out of character for how he views himself (WE ALL KNOW DIFFERENTLY, FORD!) he offers her the empty bed in his room, the last one at the motel, so she and the baby don’t freeze to death in the car. She asks him, “Did he send you?” and then moves on and doesn’t mention it again. Right away, these two have chemistry. Ford is mourning not having Rook, Ashleigh is obviously a mother to a newborn still breast-feeding, but there’s this pull between them that is palpable as you read it.

And you have to wonder how this is gonna work because we all know that Ford is into control in the bedroom. He’s not vicious, but he likes to be in control. ;)

“Just oncejust fucking once, I want the Sandy and not the Rizzo.”

Ashleigh is heading to LA, too, so it only makes sense that they travel together. Ford pays for her car to be fixed, but it will take a few weeks. Instead, they drive together to LA after a brief stint at his family home in Vail while awaiting his Bronco to be road-worthy again.

And this is where we learn about Ford’s past, his father, his mother, his issues, his childhood, etc. Oh. My. Gosh. Heart bleeds a little. Love him a little more. And AshleighAshleigh is still a bit of a mystery, but it’s written so well that you aren’t ticked about it. You’re just hungry for more information and want them to figure out their damn pasts and get together forever and ever already!

There is so much I’ve already deleted that I wanted to share but I think it’s better if you read it for yourself. It’s those little tidbits that just make you gooey. I liked the old Ford from the Rook & Ronin series, but THIS Ford? This Ford stole my heart.
