This is a follow-up to Sandra R. Campbell's BUTTERFLY HARVEST and in the first twenty pages or so, I was really wishing I had read that one first. Happily, it is not necessary as Ms. Campbell does a marvelous job of getting you caught up with what is going on quite quickly and without lecturing you with the information. Instead you get to experience it as Seanna thinks about her recent past, her feelings for Samuel, and reads the minds of those around her.
Don't you worry though! As soon as I can, I will be getting BUTTERFLY HARVEST and re-reading both back to back!
The cast of characters is interesting, but my favorite in the beginning was Kendrick. "Seanna, you're great and all, but I was born with a hyper functioning S.M.O.A. gene. So, the less I know about this, the better." (Save My Own Ass) lol Even in the midst of a crisis after he's had a mini-meltdown, he's witty and hilarious.
I spent a good chunk of time trying to figure out what Samuel is and what he turned Seanna into. It IS explained, but first you have this build up of tension and lies and deceit - a nasty tangled web! Seanna is one of those protagonists I find most enjoyable - she is this mix of vulnerable and strong, emotional yet a fighter.
As the book progresses and you see the "monstrous" side of Seanna, you understand what "butterfly harvest" is. And you know...Zeke on the boat demonstrates that the worst monsters in the world are usually humans. *shudder*
I try to keep my reviews spoiler free, so I won't detail what Seanna learns from Bennett and Val, but I dare say you will find it fascinating!
Oh, by the way? Enjoy that cliffhanger ending! :P
